How did British Shorthairs become a Breed?

British Shorthair cats have a lengthy history tracing back to the Romans when cats were brought from Egypt back to Britain to control the rodent overpopulation. These cats were then interbred with wild cats to produce a cat well suited for hunting.

As cat fanciers selectively bred these cats they chose round faces, dense coats and stocky builds that make up the breed characteristics you see today. The breed then became recognized in the 1871 and accepted at the Crystal Palace in London for their very first cat show.

These cats are known for their calm temperament, genuine intelligence and strong independence.
